With gov­ern­ments expe­ri­enc­ing huge bud­get gaps from seri­ously dimin­ished tax rev­enues, our fer­vent hope is that the White­hurst agenda item to be dis­cussed at ANC 2A’s March 17 meet­ing will remind city and regional offi­cials why mul­ti­ple com­mu­ni­ties joined forces in 2005 and opposed this RSI (Really Stu­pid Idea).

As FBA Pres­i­dent Asher Cor­son pointed out in last week’s let­ter to you, (along with, “COUNT DRACULA RIDES THE WHITEHURST” in the Jan 20, 2010 FBN this “study” is the fifth time—dragging in an unwit­ting new player, the Met­ro­pol­i­tan Wash­ing­ton Coun­cil of Gov­ern­ments (MWCOG), to hide the source of this effort—our elected and appointed offi­cials have thumbed their noses at the com­mu­nity on this matter.

We also hope the ANC’s open dis­cus­sion will spur a crit­i­cal mass of the com­mu­nity to once again stop the fla­grant waste of pub­lic money on a project that has been unan­i­mously opposed for five years. If you agree that spend­ing $4 mil­lion for a study to jus­tify tear­ing down the Whitehurst—part of a national emer­gency evac­u­a­tion route and cru­cial con­nec­tion to and from downtown—is not in the tax-paying public’s inter­est, it’s time to join with your neigh­bors and get involved.
