You said you were twittered by the froyo truck?
While the economy put a crimp for many in vacation travel, one bright spot in the Foggy Bottom/West End corridor has become the arrival of a brilliant yellow ice cream truck. Many have memories of the soft serve ice cream truck, so news of an environmentally conscious frozen yogurt (i.e. froyo) truck may make many a heart skip a beat.
The truck, named the SweetFlow Mobile (SFM) and launched by SWEET GREEN Restaurant founders and 2007 Georgetown University grads, is equipped with a not-too sweet, frozen yogurt along with a daily selection of sumptuous, organic fresh fruit purchased locally, fresh chopped coconut and other toppings.
“It’s non-fat Stoneyfield frozen yogurt, says Tim from the other side of the open window. Two sizes in a cup with a choice of three fresh fruit toppings for $5 or $7, tax included. Cones are $2.00.”
“GREEN?? “says Tim, “where do you want to start? Sweetflow Mobile is an environmentally conscious frozen yogurt truck engineered to run without a generator, which reduces the amount of fuel consumed. Like the SWEET GREEN restaurants, our packaging is 100% compostable.”
It’s 1 pm. Tim’s noon twitter to his 1,011 followers sending his location continues to yield results. Young professionals with $5 bills crumpled in their fists queue
up to the window of the truck painted happy-faceyellow with green detailing. At the window stands Tim Noonan, a 2009 Georgetown finance and business grad.
Tim is the Director of SFM: its caretaker, staff, manager, planner, quality control and did I mention – friendly customer service rep excellent at multi-tasking. Between customers and our interview he even found a moment to break into the frug with a female friend who joined him for the early afternoon route.
It’s encouraging that there are young people like Tim creating new businesses and putting in the long hours to make them successful. Moreover, watching SFM customers eating their froyo, one can’t help but notice that their faces all get this same zen-like smile, confirming for me that this is something really special.
